Fashion of the Fields and great race conditions entertained a near record crowd at the Jerilderie Gold Cup on Saturday.
With numbers increasing significantly from last year, Jerilderie Race Club president Des McRae said the attendance was as high as it had been since they opened the new track in 2000.
Race club secretary Alecia Williams said there were more than 70 acceptances so great fields for each race.
‘‘While the weather was a bit blowy and cooler than we would have liked everyone seemed to have had a great day,’’ she said.
The Gold Cup winners was Beaujeen, trained by Phillip Sweeney and ridden by Bradley Vale (more race details on page 16).
‘‘We couldn't have asked for a better day,’’ Mr McRae said.
‘‘Despite a bit of wind no-one was deterred from attending, adding to it was the perfect track conditions and the great facilities.
‘‘The new toilets were finished on Friday so they were a huge hit and were very well received by patrons.’’
The club raised more than $18,000 on the day through the gate with about 1400 people attending.
After the races the entertainment continued, with local artist Steven Jones making the trip back from his current residency in Geelong to perform for the rest of the evening.
“We partied on until 8pm,’’ Mr McRae said.
Fashions on the Field was a popular event with many contestants.
